Happy 250th Birthday, America!

I’m not a soccer fan but my son suddenly started watching the World Cup and his enthusiasm has rubbed off. We’ve watched several games together and the excitement during these games is contagious, but what has really stood out to me is the praise the United States of America has received from our visitors. The world thought the U.S. would for sure ruin this glorious event, but that has not been the case. I’ve heard story after story of how surprised people are by America, and my heart is bursting with joy.
People from all over the world are expressing their gratitude and (let's be honest) shock by the way they have been welcomed by Americans. Our hospitality is top notch, our food is amazing (portion sizes are huge, they say), and everything is bigger here too, not just in Texas, and not just the food. People are seen dancing in the streets, speaking so many different languages, and understanding one another although they are from different backgrounds.
In a time when it seems like the world is falling apart, this is refreshing. It gives us hope and shows that we are more alike than we think. To think that one sport, soccer, or futbol, can have that type of impact is unimaginable, but the truth is that the people are what have made this event truly memorable. It is such a delight to see America shine on its 250th birthday. What a way to celebrate this milestone! Happy birthday and cheers to you, America! (Now wouldn't it be cool if we won the World Cup. One can always hope).
